Extra Credit: Serafima’s Extraordinary Adventure

While watching the film Serafima’s Extraordinary Adventure, there were multiple clear indications of Serafima’s faith in God as a Christian Orthodox. She had been ostracized by many in her girl’s school, including the headmasters, but she remained loyal to her faith. Throughout the short film, Serafima is seen carrying her mother’s cross, speaking to Rita and Lady Liza about God and how he exists and will rise again, and has continuous visions of her on a boat with father Serafim on the way to God. The repetition of these religious objects highlights her steadfast belief in God, even though all forces were telling her not to and to abandon her faith.*(Farnsworth, Simple Repetition of Words and Phrases) At the end of the film when she is reunited with her mom, proof is revealed that God exists and her classmates accept her as a friend again. This film also relates to the Hidden God poetics through the use of literal (Historical) objects. Toward the end of the film when Serafima crosses the divided bridge over troubled water to escape the transfer school, this can be compared to Moses crossing the Red Sea to escape oppression and bondage. The logic behind this is to show how in touch Serafima is with her faith and the fact that she will never stop believing in God because it is also a way to connect with her family and hope for a happy and safe future. The religious aspects of the film overtake the plot in order to explain the origins os Father Serafim and how it relates to Serafima. Even her name is almost identical to the spiritual figure, affirming her faith and rooting her in Christian Orthodox religion.*(May, logos)
